It’s possible that this referencing that most people end up dying in a hospital. The song is your life and it’s all just a big wait for you to end up in a hospital room at the end of your life.

Annotation:
Way is saying that often sad songs are about moping around and being filled with self-pity. Songs that are sad should be sad with a message, not an empty call for pity.

Lyric: We never did mean nothing to ya, never, did we?

He is talking about people suddenly not liking the band anymore because of something they’ve changed (for example their music style).

This lyric seems to be more about the band itself rather than The Patient. It could be a statement about the criticism they’ve faced over the years, like  being called a cult by ignorant individuals who don’t pay attention to their meaningful lyrics. If their deep sentiments are overlooked, why make the effort? Since their lyrics are often ignored, their guitar riffs and drum beats stand out. If they focus on instrumentation, they wouldn’t have to worry about the effort required to craft lyrics.
